Why Buy

One of the “World’s Best Places to Stay” says Conde Nast Traveler. One of the “500 Best Hotels in the World” according to Travel +Leisure's most recent 2013 awards. AAA has awarded our luxury downtown Portland hotel 4 Diamonds for 28 consecutive years. A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Historic Hotels of America, the acclaimed Heathman Hotel is situated downtown in the heart of Portland, Oregon’s Financial and Cultural Districts. This sophisticated boutique hotel offers luxurious accommodations and award-winning service - a refreshing blend of Portland history and modern hospitality. From its renowned Heathman Restaurant and Bar where Executive Chef Michael Stanton creates farm to table seasonal cuisine, to its remarkable art collection, The Heathman Hotel is a Portland Oregon landmark, a place “Where Service is Still an Art”.

Venue Description

The Heathman was first built in 1927 and is a Historic 10 - story hotel that was completely recreated in 1984, renovated in its entirety except for the hotel's exterio.  The eucalyptus paneled Tea Court Lounge was painstakingly restored to it's original state and gave the hotel the staus of a National Historic Landmark.

Then owner, Mark Stevenson’s vision for the hotel was generated by his artist’s eye and connoisseur’s taste. The Heathman, in design and tradition, was to harmonize art and hospitality.

Bound by brick and mortar toPortland’s Performing Arts Center and steps away fromOregon’s art museum and cultural centers, Mark Stevenson chose The Heathman location for its proximity to the arts. Opening General Manager Mary Arnstad launched a dynamic campaign of support and interaction between the arts and business that now attracts artists of all disciplines, and international recognition for the hotel.

An esteemed designer, Andrew Delfino, guided the renovation plan of The Heathman’s interior spaces so that art would be an essential element of their design.

The Heathman guestroom art collection consists of 250 paintings, photographs and works on paper, all originals. No duplications, no reproductions. Each room unique in art. For example: Director Gus Van Sant’s art graces the wall of one of the hotel’s Symphony Suites.

We chose each piece individually, favoring the work of Northwest regional artists. It is not “safe art” by conventional hotel standards. One elderly guest covered the painting in his room with a towel because it worried his wife. It was replaced. If the art offends, we move the art, or we move the guest.

On The Heathman’s main floor, the art reflects Mark Stevenson’s love of collecting and his love of travel. Arriving guests are welcomed by a contemporary American light screen by Hap Tivey in the entrance and an early nineteenth century Japanese screen above the reception desk.

Large eighteenth century canvases by French landscape artist Claude Gellée enhance the classic warmth of the tea court.

In the Marble Bar, grand art deco mirrors from the Waldorf Astoria reflect carvings in wood-a two hundred year-old Burmese bas-relief. Heavenly hues of a neo-impressionist oil painting byPortlandartist Richard Gruetter cover the west wall.

The Mezzanine Gallery wraps the upper walls of the tea court, with meeting rooms named afterPortland’s bridges, café-seating for guests, and more art. There you will find painting on sculpted sheets of acrylic by Gregg Renfrow; Richard Misrach’s superb photographic series of classical Greek ruins and technology-age sculptures by Stuart Lehrman.

In The Heathman Restaurant our culinary art is food and wine, featuring the bounty of thePacific Oceanand Northwest fields, forests and vineyards. Fresh and delicious food is prepared in our award-winning kitchen and served under walls brightened by Andy Warhol’s Endangered Species series-silkscreens of ten of the earth’s precious and diminishing wild animals and birds. The rest of the series can be found just off the elevators on each guestroom floor.

The joy of collecting continues, but at The Heathman, we don’t want our art confined to the walls. The essence of The Heathman’s art is hospitality. Our staff, many of whom are artists, seek to cultivate the fine art of service. How does a guest feel at The Heathman? That is the test of our art. To create for our guest a place of comfort and beauty, a world apart.
